Silicone contamination

Silicones are known for their excellent properties such as water-, UV- and heat-resistance along with high durability. For this reason silicones are often used in sealants, glue and lubricating agents. Another good example is the NITOSHIELD coating by MAVRO which is a 100% silicone concentrate with outstanding properties and outdoor durability. Easy removal of silicone contamination with MAVRO products.

In some cases however, the outstanding properties of silicones cause problems. In the paint industry, this is called silicone contamination. A silicone contamination can be cause by silicone sealant that leaves silicone residues on a surface. As the sealant is applied, the applicator touches the wet sealant and leaves residues on any surface he or she touches. Silicone spray is also a common cause of contamination. Aerosols carried by the wind can cause silicone contamination across a wide area.

A silicone contamination causes defects when painting over the surface. Silicone contaminants on the surface cause craters or ‘fish-eyes’ in the film. The silicones prevent a paint from flowing into a smooth film.

To paint a contaminated surface, there are a few solutions. One solution is to use a special silicone-resistant primer or coating. Another solution is to remove the silicone contamination using MAVRO SILICONE REMOVER. This product is based on sulfamic acid and a strong solvent. The product is effective against the most harsh silicone contaminations and can even remove silicone based coatings.
